I have often heard children’s book publishers, editors, and even authors say that a rhyming picture book is passé—that only the experts can make rhyme work in a picture book. Most times (according to these “industry professionals”), a rhyming picture book will be written by an amateur and will not find much success on bookstore shelves. Obviously, I disagree with this belief, and here is yet another great rhyming picture book to prove those know-it-alls wrong.
Not only is the rhyming “tune” catchy enough to be memorized easily, the subject matter is so unique that Ms. Daniels has written a true one-of-a-kind. This book is about a grammar school janitor who just can’t seem to keep up with the “western boot or wooden clog, the sneaker from the morning jog, slipper, sandal, soccer cleat—all the shoes on all the feet” that traipse in and out of the gym every day. But somehow, the reader knows that Bob the janitor just loves those kids and takes great pride in his job. The ending has a wonderful twist that will make even the sleepy parent chuckle.
Ms. Daniels lives in Merrick, Long Island (about 15 minutes from my house!), and this is her first picture book. Mr. Foster lives in Nashville TN with his wife and their three children. Though I can’t be sure, this might be his first attempt at a picture book as well. Don’t let the rookie aspect fool you. It’s a great book.
